Silent Sign
'Silent Sign' is based on Norwegian deaf language and presents us with different signs. Only hands can be seen against a dark background. Since traditional deaf language also depends on facial expression, and since many words use the same signs, the meaning of those signs depends on the context in which they occur. The lack of reference permits them to be read symbolically, which renders them communicative on other levels; they become symbols for language, rather than a language of symbols.
